Rinpoche’s Vision for a Living Temple: A Week of Unity in Lumbini

For one remarkable week in Lumbini, the birthplace of our Teacher, Buddha Shakyamuni, practitioners from across all Buddhist traditions gathered as one community to recite the sacred words of the Buddha together. In languages including Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan, Vietnamese, and English, the Dharma resounded throughout the Thousand Buddha Temple, marking a truly historic moment in the history of Buddhist gatherings.

In the video and photo gallery below, we share some highlights of this extraordinary event.

Rinpoche reflected with deep gratitude on the countless hands and hearts that helped build the Thousand Buddha Temple, reminding us that a temple comes alive only when it is used, when it becomes a living space for practice, study, and harmony. As followers of the same Buddha, he emphasized, we are one sangha. The Thousand Buddha Temple does not belong to any single lineage or group. It belongs to the world.

Throughout the week, representatives of diverse Buddhist traditions offered their insights and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the establishment of this magnificent temple and for the extraordinary recitation gathering. As part of the Annual Fall Seminar, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Phakchok Rinpoche, and other esteemed teachers offered profound teachings each evening.

The program also featured a full day of Chöd practice, accompanied by moving chants, traditional dance, and deep symbolic meaning. Concluding the week, Rinpoche bestowed three days of Vajrayana empowerments related to the practice of Tara’s Triple Excellence, bringing the event to a powerful and auspicious close.

Rinpoche encourages all of us to continue nurturing such gatherings for many years to come, and invites everyone to join the Thousand Buddha Temple Membership Program to help preserve and connect with this precious Mahāvihāra.
